Gifts to Art History and Visual Culture contribute to...
In Art History and Visual Culture, the world is our laboratory—museums, architecture, and images that we encounter in our daily lives provide an opportunity for transformative learning. A study of Art History and Visual Culture invites students to think deeply about the art and visual culture that shapes our lives, from historic paintings, sculptures, manuscripts, and buildings to contemporary murals, photographs, and typeface design. Art Historians are creative thinkers who read images through a critical lens, connecting visual expression to history, society, and politics. In Art History and Visual Culture, students build skills that matter far beyond the classroom: seeing carefully, thinking critically, and talking about complex issues with clarity and empathy. Your support makes it possible for our undergraduate and graduate students to engage in transformational educational experiences: Tommie Give Day support provides the funding that students need to visit museums, architectural sites, libraries, and archives in order to conduct rigorous research, enriched through first-hand experiences with art. Curious about how your support on Tommie Give Day allowed for student research in the past? Please see the In Context Blog: https://blogs.stthomas.edu/art...
Student quote: Soleil Des Lauriers ‘23 Art History and Visual Culture Major “The Art History program not only provided me with a diverse skillset in analyzing art from the ancient to the contemporary, but its foundations also gave me the opportunity to branch out into other fields such as archaeology and anthropology, to garner tangible and impactful experiences abroad, and to reflect on my own relationship with art as a multidisciplinary artist and scholar. The study of art and its history is beneficial to those who wish to enrich their perspectives on life, culture, and human connection. I am forever grateful for my experience at the University of St. Thomas, whose supportive Art History faculty and a unique selection of courses gave me the opportunity, knowledge, and confidence to pursue a graduate degree on art in the ancient world.”
