REAL Program

When a first-generation student arrives at St. Thomas, the excitement of being the first in their family to attend college is often paired with uncertainty: Will I belong here? Will I be able to keep up? Who will help me find my way?

That’s where the Reaching Excellence in Academics and Leadership (REAL) Program comes in, not just as a bridge, but as a launchpad. Since 1998, the REAL Program has helped first-generation and students with financial need gain a strong start: they earn five college credits, live on campus, work jobs on campus and gain access to dedicated faculty, staff and peer mentors. In five short weeks, REAL cultivates leadership, builds confidence and creates the community every student deserves. They step into their first semester not only prepared for the academic rigor but also with the confidence and leadership skills to thrive in college and beyond.

One REAL student put it best:

“The REAL program gave us the perfect taste. The perfect taste for the resources we can use as students, the perfect taste in balancing a job, school and fun. I am walking away feeling more knowledgeable. This is by far the best program on campus.”
