Student Affairs Emergency Fund
At the University of St. Thomas, we believe every student deserves dignity and personal attention. Yet, too often, unexpected emergencies threaten their ability to continue their education. A sudden medical bill, food or housing insecurity, transportation challenges or a family crisis can disrupt stability and put a student’s future at risk.
The Student Affairs Emergency Fund, together with our partnership with the Minnesota Office of Higher Education, provides critical financial assistance in these moments of crisis. Students can receive up to $1,200 in emergency grant support for essentials such as rent, groceries, utilities, transportation or medical care—resources that help them stay focused on their studies and moving toward graduation.
We’ve helped students stay in school by covering rent, transportation and other essential expenses when they had nowhere else to turn. One student shared that an unexpected financial burden left them behind on rent and at risk of losing their housing. Thanks to the emergency grant and the additional resources we connected them with, they were able to remain in their apartment, meet their basic needs and continue their academics without this burden weighing on them.
A Word from Karen Lange, Vice President for Student Affairs
At St. Thomas, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside students as they pursue their dreams of higher education. I’ve also seen the toll unexpected financial hardships can take—whether it’s a family emergency, a sudden medical expense or an unforeseen housing issue. These challenges are often beyond a student’s control, yet they carry immense stress and uncertainty.
It’s in these moments that emergency funding makes all the difference. Your generosity provides students with the stability and hope they need to remain on track with their education. I’m deeply grateful for the donors who make this possible and invite you to join us in ensuring no student faces these challenges alone.
Thank you for considering a gift to the Student Affairs Emergency Fund. Your support changes lives and upholds the values that make St. Thomas distinctive—dignity, personal attention and care for every student.
