We are fundraising for current international students at St. Thomas who are trying to complete their degree but are experiencing unforeseen financial hardships. Some of our current students’ home countries are going through civil unrest and war as we speak. We also have students whose families are impacted by natural disasters such as large scale earthquakes, hurricanes and tsunamis. These circumstances directly impact some of our international students who are trying to complete their degree and eventually return home to give back to their country. Often times in these situations, finances are drastically affected. Our international students have fewer resources to draw from than U.S. citizens—they are not able to take out bank loans without a U.S. co-sponsor and their visa only allows them to work on campus during their first year. Students are limited to working in their field of study after that. Unfortunately, we have had talented and dedicated international students leave St. Thomas because of these unanticipated events that are completely out of their control. When an international student leaves us, our community loses too. Our international students are a very important part of the fabric of St. Thomas—our lives are enriched by the experiences and perspectives international students bring to campus.
Any donation that you, your friends, or your family can provide will help these students and put them one step closer to completing their St. Thomas education. We thank you in advance for your contribution and for any support you’ve already provided to help international students succeed at St Thomas. We have over 500 international students from nearly 80 countries at St. Thomas and we are proud to say this population is growing each year.
With gratitude,
Lori Friedman, Director of the Office of International Students & Scholars

My name is Hayley. I came to the United States to pursue my education but due to unforeseen circumstances, I had a financial hardship. Thanks to a scholarship that was granted to me, I was able to move forward with my education. I would like to thank the donors that have considered these circumstances and made this possible not only for me but other who are in the same situation as me.
