Gifts to Southworth Planetarium contribute to...
At the Southworth Planetarium, we awaken curiosity about the natural world and inspire people of all ages to explore the universe around them. For more than half a century, we have served as a gateway to discovery for learners of all ages. Today, this community resource housed at USM stands as Southern Maine’s largest public STEM outreach center, welcoming ~15,000 visitors each year through more than 700 public and group programs. From immersive 360-degree dome presentations to hands-on learning experiences, the planetarium sparks curiosity, fosters scientific literacy, and strengthens our community’s connection to the universe.
Our programs reach far beyond astronomy. We highlight scientific events from around the world, offer interdisciplinary learning opportunities, and support K–12 enrichment that helps students imagine pathways into STEM careers. Community members of all ages—families, school groups, lifelong learners, and educators—rely on the planetarium as a trusted, inspiring resource for learning and engagement.
As we look to the future, we are excited to be investing in upgrades that will enhance the visitor experience and ensure that our dome remains a vibrant, modern space for exploration. Updated projection systems, improved technology, and enriched learning tools will allow us to deliver clearer, more dynamic shows and expand the ways we support science education in our region. We’ve already begun this work, but your support this Giving Tuesday will help accelerate these improvements and expand the impact we can have on the people of Southern Maine.
By giving today, you help sustain a community asset that continues to inspire wonder, promote learning, and bring the universe within reach for thousands each year. Thank you for helping us grow our mission—and for keeping the stars shining bright for everyone who walks through our doors.
