Gifts to Gabriel von Eisenstein contribute to...
Gabriel von Eisenstein is a wealthy, somewhat self-important man who is caught up in a web of lies and social conventions. He is Rosalinde's husband, but their marriage has become strained due to his neglect and infidelity. At the beginning of the opera, Gabriel is facing a prison sentence for a minor offense but is determined to enjoy his last night of freedom. He attends a lavish masquerade ball, unaware of the various schemes around him. He is an amusing character, full of bravado, but also somewhat clueless, especially when it comes to his wife’s antics. His character arc moves from arrogance to eventual self-realization and humility.
