The Ryan O'Malley '99 Memorial Scholarship was established by his family after his passing in 2011, in his memory and to enable Computer Science students of limited resources with an interest in fitness to attend The University of Scranton.
Since that time, Ryan's family and friends have raised nearly $200,000 for the scholarship, much of it through ROAR: The Ryan O'Malley Annual Race, a 5K fundraising event the family organized from 2013-2017.
In 2018, John, Ryan’s brother, embarked upon the inaugural ROAR: The Ryan O’Malley Annual Ride by cycling the 500+ miles of The Colorado Trail from Denver to Durango in Ryan’s memory.
"My brother Ryan lived with a deep commitment to fitness, learning, and helping others. Carrying that spirit forward has brought our family a sense of healing we never thought possible. Out of such an unimaginable loss for our family came something meaningful and lasting in Ryan’s name. The Ryan T. O'Malley ’99 Memorial Scholarship is changing lives in ways we can truly see and feel, bringing together our community with a powerful ripple effect. It has been a gift for my family to hear from the recipients, their stories and their gratitude. Thank you for your enduring support in making all of this possible."
