The Biology Department’s comprehensive program exposes students to concepts across the breadth of biology from the molecular level to ecosystems. In our research-rich curriculum, we emphasize the process of science and the development of skills used in laboratory or field experimental procedures, data analysis and critical reasoning, and communication. Fundamental to our program is a commitment to providing independent research and internship opportunities, which encourage students to work self-sufficiently and assume ownership of their learning as they prepare for graduate and professional schools, teaching in the life sciences, and work in applied biology.
Many of our students choose to pursue research opportunities with USD faculty in our research labs, particularly over the summer when they can immerse themselves in their projects. Past student researchers have found these experiences transformative, helping them gain tangible skills as well as the confidence to apply them in pursuit of their post-graduation career goals, whether those are graduate studies or entering the workforce.
Research funding is competitive, and each year we are challenged to find support for students seeking new research experiences as well as those looking to advance progress on current projects. Please consider donating to support more opportunities for our undergraduates to conduct research in biology! Funds will be used to provide student stipends, research supplies, and conference participation for our students.
