Gifts to the Department of Mathematics & Statistics are used to support student enrichment and belonging. From Board Game Night to conferences, our goal is to provide Mathematics & Statistics majors with a positive, inclusive experience. Your donation will go towards emerging student needs, student groups, department colloquia, and other areas that are vital to the collegial life of the department and its majors. All donations are helpful, no matter the amount.
The study of Mathematics & Statistics has never been more important. By studying mathematics and statistics students develop analytical skills and an analytical attitude. They learn to pay attention to all the assumptions involved in a given problem or situation, and they learn to break down a complicated problem into a series of tractable steps. They develop the habit of critical thinking: testing their conclusions and the conclusions of others to ensure they are based on adequate data and accurate reasoning.
Such skills and attitudes are highly valued by employers as well as graduate and professional schools (architecture, engineering, business, law, medicine, pharmacy, etc.). A degree in mathematics signals to a prospective employer or admissions officer that you are capable of learning the kinds of analytical procedures that are required in a given job or profession, even if those procedures are not specifically mathematical.
