What a fantastic #SeahawksGive! It’s been so encouraging to see the support coming from our CHSSA community and beyond.
I’m constantly amazed by the achievements and innovation that come from our college and from UNCW as a whole. Sometimes that looks like groundbreaking research and sometimes that looks like compelling works of art. That’s what I love about CHSSA: there’s always some fascinating new niche in our disciplines to discover!
This year, I’ve worked face-to-face with students from across our college on how we can continue to enhance the educational experiences we offer. It’s a promising start to a journey where we’ll build on our strengths and explore new ways for our students can be inspired, connected, and prepared.

With the help of supporters like you, we can realize those goals and set new ones that go beyond our imaginations.
So whether you’re a longtime partner of our programs or you gave for the first time this year, I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart.

When Dr. Jennifer Biddle led a group of Film Studies students out to the Down East coastal communities with one of her Master’s of Coastal and Ocean Policy classes over spring break, it set the stage for a unique and trailblazing exercise in interdisciplinary research. Take it from MCOP student Kennedy Huntsman:
“Speaking with locals who have deep generational ties to the land, culture, and coastal politics gave me insight that will forever shape how I approach my work. Stepping into the role of producer reinforced the importance of meeting communities where they are and engaging with politically and scientifically complex issues with greater empathy and care.
This experience will undoubtedly make me a better political and legal advocate, and I hope the film students involved can say the same about their own growth within their discipline."

This trip was made possible by grants from CHSSA and the Center for Support of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships, and further support makes more opportunities like this one possible.
At the end of this semester, you’ll get to see the fruits of their labor. But right now during #SeahawksGive, you can help ensure our students get to experience this caliber of meaningful hands-on learning into the future.

Throughout the Department of Communication Studies curriculum, courses focus on cutting edge technology and methods that ensure students can take big strides in an ever-evolving field. The new Applied Learning Classroom unveiled in February — courtesy of generous support from Mimi and the late Tom Cunningham — is part of that.

For #SeahawksGive this year, Bill and his wife, PJ, are creating a challenge gift that'll provide important support for COM students who are out to make a serious impact through their work. Once COM reaches 25 donors, that'll unlock a $1000 gift for the William J. Bolduc and Pamela Kirschner Bolduc Award for Global, Environmental, and Ethical Media Production.
Together, we can make this happen! No matter the size, your gift counts.
What better way to kick off #SeahawksGive than to show a little love to our incredible arts programs? 🎭

Inspired. Connected. Prepared.
The College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts (CHSSA) offers programs that expand knowledge and promote creativity across a wide variety of disciplines that speak to being human in important ways. CHSSA offers limitless opportunities for meaningful hands-on learning — our students take part in collaborative and interdisciplinary research and service while also making a positive societal impact.
By making a gift to the CHSSA Excellence Fund during Seahawks Give, you’ll provide critical support for priority initiatives and programs across the college, increasing access to student opportunities and enhancing the Seahawk experience.
Our departments serve the arts by fostering and growing creative talent, connecting communities, defining the human experience and enriching lives. Our students explore the full breadth of expression and theory in their study and become masters of their craft, complemented by professional mentoring and skill building. Beyond our academic departments, the Office of the Arts and the landmark Kenan Auditorium are a testament to our continued commitment as a steadfast community partner for the arts.
Inclusive of the arts and with much overlap into social sciences, the humanities take us on a deep exploration of what it means to be human — through different perspectives, dimensions, cultures, theories and practical skills. Study of these disciplines imbue students with strong critical thinking, connection and decision-making skills that both inform and strengthen their personal and professional journey.
The social sciences examine human relationships with each other, the world around us, our societal context and the power structures we live in. In these fields, research and community engagement help steer human systems to achieve and accomplish more, improve people’s lives and well-being, become more efficient and arrive at just outcomes.
