Being a music student at UNCG is a remarkable opportunity for aspiring artists preparing for careers in music education or performance. Our students develop comprehensive musicianship through studies in music theory, ear training, history, and performance, emerging as well-rounded, highly skilled musicians. Over the course of their degree, they receive hundreds of hours of private lessons, masterclasses, rehearsals, and – performance opportunities.
Yet, even with the exceptional resources offered by the UNCG School of Music, students still face significant out-of-pocket costs that can limit their ability to take full advantage of their education.
For Double Reed students - those studying oboe or bassoon - there’s an additional financial burden: the cost of reed-making materials. Each year, these students are expected to make hundreds of reeds, using cane (Arundo donax) that costs roughly $4 per piece for oboe reeds and $5 per piece for bassoon reeds. When the expense becomes too great, students often make fewer reeds, which can significantly hinder their progress and artistry.
For all music students, one of the most challenging recurring expenses is hiring a piano accompanist for required solo recital performances.
Our Goal
This campaign aims to raise funds to directly support UNCG’s Double Reed students in two ways:
- $4,000 – To purchase 50 pieces of cane annually for each oboe and bassoon student.
- $1,000 – To provide stipends that help students hire professional piano accompanists for solo recitals.
While this campaign will not cover every expense these students face, it will ease two of their most pressing financial challenges. Any funds raised beyond our goal will be used to provide even greater support for our double reed community.
Together, we can help UNCG’s oboe and bassoon students focus less on financial strain and more on what truly matters - their music.
