The Drs. Mullen Don’t Be Afraid to Change the World Scholarship seeks to provide financial support to students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds who engage in diversity-based leadership initiatives on campus.
Created by three alumni (Gus Adams, '09; Ross Bryan, '95; and James Carter, '00), this fund honors the 30+ year tenure of both Drs. Dwight and Dolly Mullen in the field of political science. As two of the first Black faculty at UNC Asheville, the Drs. Mullen co-founded the African-American Colloquium, which dramatically improved graduation rates for Black students in the 1990’s, and founded the State of Black Asheville, a resource which collects data-driven research and analysis about racial disparities within Asheville.
This scholarship will commemorate the legacy of the Drs. Mullen and will support the next generation of leaders.
