What is Baja?
Baja SAE is an exciting annual competition organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), where student teams design and build single-seat, all-terrain vehicles. These vehicles are engineered to handle tough terrain, with the driver safely contained within the structure.
Participating in Baja SAE isn’t just about building a vehicle—it’s about teamwork, innovation, and perseverance. As students, we take on the challenge of designing, engineering, manufacturing, testing, and promoting our vehicle while balancing academic priorities and generating financial support for our project.
Our ultimate goal? To represent the University of New Orleans and compete at the Baja SAE competition in South Carolina, taking place October 2–5, 2025. This prestigious event brings together over 100 of the top engineering schools from around the world. We’re determined to not only compete but to make UNO proud!
Our Team
We are the UNO Mini-Baja Racing Team, proudly operating within the Dr. Robert A. Savoie College of Engineering since 1996. After overcoming a brief hiatus due to COVID, we revived our team in Fall 2022 and are committed to building on our legacy.
Our team consists of about 15 active student members from diverse disciplines, including Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, Electrical Engineering, and even Finance. Every year, we design and build a brand-new off-road vehicle from scratch, working out of the Mini-Baja Lab in Room 105 of the Engineering Building.
This year’s competition in South Carolina presents an exciting opportunity to showcase our skills, creativity, and hard work on a national stage.
