About

For over 50 years, Shoals Marine Laboratory on Appledore Island has been a proud leader in marine science, education, and research. As the largest undergraduate-serving marine lab in the country, we pride ourselves on our student-driven focus. SML offers a wide range of marine science-related topics to explore—from oceanography and shark biology to marine parasitology and sustainable fisheries. SML offers hands-on learning that is different from classroom-based courses, which allows students to have the unique opportunity to use what they've learned in a real-life setting. This program allows students to be able to see themselves as active scientists and gives them an enriched experience that they will carry with them in their future careers.

Funds raised during The (603) Challenge go directly to support our students. 80% of Shoals students need financial aid to paricipate in our programs, meaning we need your support to get as many students out to Appledore as possible! Donor support helped us reach our goal of 150 donors, unlocking a total of $69,000 from our generous underwriters. Thank you!

If you haven't made your gift yet, there is still time: Rise to the challenge today!

Updates
150 donors achieved! $69,000 total unlocked for Shoals!

Thank you to all of our donors who made this possible - we couldn't have done it without you. There is still time left in The (603) Challenge and the Grand Finale Bonus is still active, so if you haven't made your gift to Shoals yet, make sure you do before time runs out!
