About

The University of Michigan Army ROTC Wolverine Battalion offers a capstone experience unlike any other in the nation: The Normandy Staff Ride. This academically rigorous journey transforms senior cadets from students of history into leaders of tomorrow.

While all Army ROTC cadets nationally are required to complete a "staff ride" battle analysis, our commitment to leadership excellence demands more. We are one of the only programs in the nation that travels outside the U.S. to ensure our future officers gain the deepest, most impactful understanding of leadership and decision-making under fire.

Senior cadets spend months conducting an intensive, in-depth study of the D-Day landings, analyzing primary source documents and dissecting the actions of a specific unit involved in the invasion. Then, during Spring break, deliver a professional military briefing detailing the unit’s mission, obstacles, strategic decisions, and actions on D-Day while on the actual terrain. The staff ride also includes reflections at the American cemeteries, honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

This demanding, experiential learning opportunity strengthens critical thinking, communication skills, confidence, and professional judgment in ways no classroom alone ever could. Our graduates enter the U.S. Army with a profound appreciation for operational complexity and the human dimension of warfare.

This extraordinary opportunity is only made possible through the generosity of our supporters. Your contribution is vital, especially as the Wolverine Battalion is expanding its mission. Beginning in Fall 2026, Eastern Michigan University (EMU) will officially join the University of Michigan ROTC program as an extension unit. This expansion significantly increases the number of cadets we will train and commission each year. We believe every future officer in the Wolverine Battalion, from both U-M and EMU, deserves access to this transformative experience. We are one team, and we must ensure the Normandy Staff Ride remains accessible to this larger cohort of future Army leaders.

By supporting the Normandy Staff Ride, you are directly investing in the quality and character of the future leadership of the U.S. Army. Your gift makes their transformation possible. Join us in sustaining this unparalleled tradition and help every Wolverine Battalion cadet go on to lead with the character, competence, and purpose forged on the shores of Normandy!
