Giving Blueday 2026: A Brighter, Smarter Future for UMAP

For more than 85 years, the University of Michigan Aphasia Program (UMAP) has pioneered the intensive therapy model, transforming lives one conversation at a time. Our clients, care partners, and staff form a vibrant community — propelled by compassion, innovation, and the belief that communication is essential to human connection.

But here’s something you may not know: our technology setup is, shall we say, vintage. While we love a good throwback, our trusty old TV cart — with tangled wires and a remote that seems to have a mind of its own — just isn’t keeping pace with our clients’ needs in 2026.

Why a movable smartboard matters

Imagine group sessions where clients can easily interact with therapy materials, meetings where every participant (in-person OR on Zoom) can see, share, and learn, and spontaneous brainstorming sessions where ideas leap to life digitally. With a movable, interactive smartboard, these moments go from “improv” to “innovation.”

A new smartboard would allow:

  • Dynamic group therapy sessions with interactive visuals, word games, and digital content
  • Access to remote care partners with easy Zoom integration
  • Seamless team meetings where we can plan, collaborate, and celebrate together
  • The ability to bring technology directly to any client group or common area — no more crowding around a tiny screen!

Our Goal: $5,000

If we reach our fundraising goal this March, we’ll have the ability to purchase a high-quality, mobile smartboard to improve therapy delivery, collaboration, and accessibility at UMAP.

What happens if we go beyond?

If our community’s generosity powers us past our goal, every additional dollar will continue to enhance day-to-day operations at UMAP.

We’ll use donations where they are most needed, which could be (but not limited to):

  • Purchasing new books for our library: Your contributions will help us purchase highly-requested titles from our wish list, expanding our library for clients, families, and staff to enjoy during therapy, downtime, and for educational purposes — helping to inform and educate our community.
  • Purchasing software for communication and therapy: Dedicated apps designed to support communication needs, including for AAC (augmentative and alternative communication), support for writing/texting/emailing, and connecting with others.
  • Other needs as identified.

Why Your Gift Matters

Technology doesn’t just speed up our internet — it helps speed progress, connection, and hope.

Together, we can create an environment where every client, care partner, and therapist feels heard and seen. Communication isn’t just about words — it’s about sharing life.

Will you help us upgrade our future?

Donate today and help UMAP bring cutting-edge, accessible technology to everyone who comes through our doors.

Every dollar helps. Every gift is a step toward connection. Thank you for considering a gift to our Giving Blueday campaign!
