About

With a legacy built on innovation, the University of Michigan Solar Car Team has spent 36 years racing towards a more sustainable future. We design and manufacture solar cars that cross continents and compete against top teams in the World Solar Challenge in Australia and the American Solar Challenge across the U.S. With 10 national championships and 8 international podium finishes, we are the most successful solar racing team in the country.

This year, we are embarking on a new adventure, the Solar Trek. The Solar Trek is a 12-day journey across the country from Ann Arbor to Los Angeles. Along the way, our team will visit sponsors, test innovations, and educate the youth on sustainability. The deciding factor in this race decision was to take a step back from racing and focus on our car’s design. Innovation is a key part of our team’s identity. Embodying this, we will focus on engineering improvements as we prepare for the design cycle of our 19th vehicle and the 2027 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge.

As the Solar Trek approaches, the team is working harder than ever. We hope to advance sustainable engineering and grow the future of solar racing, but we can’t do this without your help. Your donation will directly fund our team’s innovative efforts, such as a mechanical fin that significantly improves our car’s aerodynamic capabilities. Your support is the last push we need to begin the Solar Trek on May 12th. We are beyond grateful for all the help we receive and hope you follow our journey this summer! Go Blue!

About our Organization

The University of Michigan Solar Car Team is an entirely student-run organization that designs and builds solar electric vehicles. The team races both nationally and internationally. Since its establishment in 1989, the team has built 18 vehicles, won the American Solar Challenge ten times, placed in the top three in the World Solar Challenge seven times, and won one international competition. The team is recognized as the most successful team in North America, and one of the most successful teams in the world.
