The Health Policy Student Association (HPSA) is an interdisciplinary student organization at the University of Michigan housed within the School of Public Health’s Department of Health Management & Policy. During this academic year, HPSA more than tripled in size, growing from approximately 30 members last year to over 100 active members today, reflecting increased student interest in health policy across disciplines, including public health, public policy, business, law, medicine, and beyond.
HPSA’s mission is to support and empower students interested in health policy by fostering education, professional development, and community through three core areas:
- Professional Development: Building policy analysis, advocacy, and leadership skills
- Interprofessional Engagement: Connecting students across disciplines to learn from diverse perspectives
- Community & Policy Engagement: Creating spaces to engage with real-world health policy challenges
HPSA offers members hands-on opportunities to engage with health policy through speaker events, panels, and professional development workshops. Members attend conferences, host an annual health policy case competition, and advocate in Lansing on issues that matter to them, while collaborating with student organizations across the School of Public Health and the broader University of Michigan. Together, these experiences position HPSA as a hub for students committed to shaping equitable, evidence-based health systems.

About our Organization
The Health Policy Student Association (HPSA) provides and supports educational and professional development opportunities for all students interested in health policy.
Our members come from many disciplines and degree programs including public health, public policy, law, social work, business, medicine, dentistry, and nursing. HPSA is a place for students to participate in health policy related events including guest speakers, local and national level meetings, panel discussions, policy outreach efforts, and a variety of social activities.
We're a growing organization with opportunities for leadership roles, career enhancement, skill development and networking in the health policy and public health world.
