The University of Michigan Fencing Club is a club sport and sponsored student organization at UMich. We travel to tournaments within the Midwestern Fencing Conference, as well as Nationals in April. We were overall conference champions last year, and many of our squads and individual fencers placed in their respective events. We are unique in that we accept students of all skill levels, at all times of the year. Whether a student has been fencing for 10 years or one day, we have a spot for them in the club. Our ability to do this comes from our donors. We provide gear and coaches for our athletes, and most of our fencers utilize club gear, especially those that are newer to fencing. Donor gift money allows us to purchase and maintain gear for our athletes to use.
In addition to purchasing gear for our athletes, donation funds will go towards covering travel costs. As it stands, our athletes must cover some of their own way to various tournaments. We fundraise throughout the year to cover the majority of travel costs, but our athletes still have to pay some out-of-pocket costs. With donor money from Giving Blueday, we hope to lower these out-of-pocket costs to allow more of our athletes to be able to travel without financial worry.
The University of Michigan Fencing Club is an incredibly impactful community to be a part of. Many of our athletes come back to our various alumni events, and some even come back to coach after they graduate. I joined the University of Michigan Fencing Club as a freshman looking to get back into fencing, and the community I found at this club exceeded all my expectations. It's truly worth investing in (and participating in if you're a student!)
