Injuries are the leading cause of childhood death in the U.S., with underserved communities facing increased risks due to significant health disparities. Pop-Up Safety Town is a mobile pediatric injury prevention program designed to meet these public health challenges head-on. Pop-Up Safety Town engages children ages 4-7, offering interactive learning experiences. The program focuses on injury prevention topics such as helmet safety, dog bite prevention, home safety, and pedestrian safety.
What sets Pop-Up Safety Town apart is its mobility and flexibility. Unlike traditional safety town programs, which are often resource-intensive and held in more affluent areas, our program provides a cost-friendly, one-day event that is easy to set up and take down.
We hope to conduct four Pop-Up Safety Town events, engaging over 400 children and their families in the underserved areas of Flint, Dearborn, Ypsilanti, and Detroit. These events will focus on both children and caregivers, providing critical injury prevention education tailored to high-risk communities. By partnering directly with Head Start Centers, which serve families living in poverty, we will ensure that our outreach reaches those most in need. These centers, which already engage vulnerable families, will serve as a strategic entry point to bring this essential programming to children enrolled in early childhood education programs.
