Big Hearts for Seniors (BHS) is comprised of six programs within the U-M Health Department of Community Health Services that provide essential services for older adults in our community related to nutrition, housing, education, socialization, safety, and health needs. Your support can help ensure that our older adult neighbors have the resources and support they need to live with dignity and purpose.
Big Hearts for Seniors (BHS) is a dedicated network of six community-based programs that are committed to enhancing the lives of older adults through vital support services, wellness programs, and lifelong learning opportunities. Serving as a safety net for seniors in need, BHS is comprised of Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels, Housing Bureau for Seniors, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, Silver Club Memory Programs, Turner African American Services Council, and Turner Senior Wellness Program. Together, these programs address the unique needs of older adults across Ann Arbor and the surrounding areas, with a mission to promote independence, health, and engagement.
Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels works to reduce hunger, food insecurity, and social isolation in a culturally responsive manner for the homebound in the Ann Arbor area who are unable to shop and prepare complete nutritious meals for themselves because of their health.
The Housing Bureau for Seniors provides critical guidance and resources on sustainable housing options, empowering older adults and their families to make informed decisions about safe and affordable living arrangements.
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute provides lifelong learning opportunities designed by member volunteers, offering high-quality, low-cost classes and programs that foster intellectual stimulation, fellowship, and community engagement. For seniors seeking meaningful discussion and enrichment, OLLI presents a vibrant platform to pursue new knowledge and share wisdom with peers.
Silver Club Memory Programs offer a supportive environment for seniors with mild to moderate memory loss, where they can engage in enriching activities like music, art, and fitness. Silver Club provides caregivers with much-needed respite, ensuring their loved ones are cared for in a safe, engaging setting.
Turner African American Services Council focuses on health equity by connecting seniors with community resources and advocating for culturally responsive care.
Turner Senior Wellness Program works as a liaison between the community and health care providers, building partnerships that enhance access to wellness resources, health education, and care for underserved older adults.
Collectively, the Big Hearts for Seniors programs aim to improve the health and quality of life for older adults and their families by addressing physical, social, and cognitive needs. Through comprehensive services and compassionate care, BHS strives to foster a community where older adults can thrive with dignity, wellness, and purpose.
In fiscal year 2024, the BHS programs had the following impact:
