About

The Department of Sociology’s undergraduate program is a vibrant community of 400-500 majors and minors dedicated to exploring social issues and promoting change. Our graduate program, one of the top programs in the country, also provides comprehensive training and research opportunities to develop future leaders in sociology.

SOCIOLOGY STRATEGIC FUND - 308214

The Sociology Strategic Fund provides discretionary funds to the Department Chair to improve academic and programmatic opportunities in the department. Historically, these funds have been dedicated to our undergraduate students, providing funding to assist in research projects, internships, study abroad, and co-curricular speakers and events. Sociology will also use these funds to enhance the graduate student experience.

SOCIOLOGY OPPORTUNITIES FOR UNDERGRADUATE LEADERSHIP (SOUL) STRATEGIC GIFTS – 328705

Sociology’s Program for First-Generation College Students

The SOUL program focuses on first-generation college students, who have historically made up over a third of our majors. Acknowledging the challenges these students have overcome, the SOUL program nurtures their leadership capabilities such as ingenuity, conscientiousness, curiosity, and risk-taking. Support for SOUL ensures these students access the resources needed to thrive at the U-M and beyond.

PROJECT COMMUNITY - 337646

Project Community is one of the longest-running programs in the country, offering undergraduates a variety of community-engaged experiences through a sociological lens. Influenced by JFK's enduring call to service from his 1961 inaugural address, Project Community has served our community for over six decades. Contributions to this fund provide transformative experiences for U-M students and communities across Southeast Michigan.

Support for these funds directly enhance the educational opportunities and community engagement of sociology students at U-M.

"The sociology department has been critical in my development as a person and an academic for the past four years. I could not have chosen a better major with such a warm, welcoming, and experiential environment.”

– U-M Sociology Student
