About

The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures is an internationally renowned center for the exploration of the humanities of Asia, where students cross the boundaries of nations. Through literature, film, language, religion, and history, students develop deep local knowledge and a broad global perspective.

Chinese, Filipino, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Javanese, Korean, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Thai, Tibetan, Urdu, and Vietnamese languages and cultures, enable students to be enriched by treasures of the past and participate in conversations of the future. Your generous gift will elevate our program by giving students opportunities to advance their knowledge.

ASIAN LANGUAGES AND CULTURES STRATEGIC FUND ‑ 308082

Your gift to the ALC Strategic Fund provides resources for newly emerging and focused initiatives, including lecture series, conferences, and innovative, engaged learning in the classroom. Additionally. this fund allows us to offer funding to our undergraduates who conduct research or language study abroad. We also use the funds to expand our community of students by hosting language tables, movie screenings, and discussion groups in Asian languages.

Your contributions to this fund are extraordinarily important to the continuing success and growth of the Department because you make it possible for opportunities for innovation, including:

  • Seed funding for faculty projects
  • Sponsorship of distinguished international visitors
  • International conferences highlighting the Department's scholarship ($25,000 per conference)
  • Innovative curriculum development and integration of information technology into our courses
  • Publication subventions

The excellence of our program depends upon the generosity of donors just like you: from Michigan, from across the United States, and from around the world. In one sense, Asia is next door, but it is also far away - and our ability to take our students to Asia for study and to bring Asian scholars, writers, and artists to Ann Arbor is crucial to our success. In our curriculum, we seek to build on existing strengths and to open new realms of study.

KRISTIN CAROSELLA MEMORIAL FUND - 373209

The Kristin Carosella Memorial Fund was established to honor Kristin Carosella's memory and to inspire other students to dedicate their lives to living and teaching abroad. It is an annual award for a Chinese, Japanese, or Korean language student who has shown a great deal of promise and is interested in teaching in China, Japan, or Korea. The award provides travel expenses and may be used in conjunction with other awards from the University of Michigan as well as other sources.
