From the beginning, UMBC was a bold move. What started in 1966 with three buildings, 750 students, and a vision to rethink higher education has become something far greater: an R1 research university, a nationally recognized model of inclusive excellence, and a community of more than 100,000 alumni changing lives, advancing knowledge, and strengthening communities. For 60 years, Retrievers have turned bold ideas into lasting impact. And we’re not done. The next chapter calls us to make even more bold moves—expanding opportunity for every student, transforming how we teach and learn, advancing discovery, and putting our expertise to work for the public good.
