Jay Eric Jessen, 69, of Chatham, Illinois, passed away on September 2, 2026. He was born in Springfield, Illinois on June 18, 1957, to Dr. Darrell and Barbara Jessen.
Jay grew up in Girard, Illinois and treasured his childhood growing up in a small town. He spent countless hours golfing at Oak Leaf Country Club, helping his father at his veterinary practice, particularly working on large-animal calls at local farms, and enjoying the company of the many childhood friends. He graduated from Girard High School in 1975 after enjoying several memorable seasons of playing on the Big Red football team.
Jay began his college education at Western Illinois University before transferring to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He went on to enjoy a fulfilling career as an engineer, specializing in highway, subdivision and hydraulic projects. He was grateful for the guidance and mentorship of colleagues such as Joe Greene, who played an invaluable role in his life. Jay was a past member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers.
In 1987, Jay married Laurie Price. Although they later divorced, they shared the joy of raising two wonderful children, Shannon Nicole Jessen and Reid Eric Price Jessen.
Jay loved creating memories with Shannon and Reid when they were young; especially mushroom hunting, coaching Shannon's softball team, boating and family trips to the Lake of the Ozarks. He also enjoyed many Boy Scout adventures with Reid.
A true dog lover at heart, Jay's life was always brightened by his Golden Retrievers, beginning with Toby, followed by Rocky, and concluding with Buddy.
Jay never knew a stranger. He had a natural ability to make people feel welcome and quickly turn acquaintances into friends. He treasured his close circle of friends, affectionately known as the Hal's Ski Team. Their adventures included countless days on the water, plenty of laughter and, more often than not, an impromptu rendition of "Tiny Bubbles." These friendships brought Jay tremendous happiness and created memories that he cherished.
A devoted Illini fan, Jay proudly supported University of Illinois sports and could often be spotted in his unmistakable orange overalls at countless tailgates over the years. His enthusiasm for the Illini was matched only by his enthusiasm for spending time with family and friends.
Jay was a past member of the Chatham Jaycees and attended Cherry Hills Church in Springfield, Illinois. Above all, Jay had a heart of gold. He cared deeply for the people in his life and, when he was healthy and able, found great joy in giving back and showing his love through his actions. His fun-loving personality, generous spirit, infectious laugh and ability to make people feel like old friends will forever be remembered by those who knew and loved him.
Jay is survived by his daughter, Shannon (Brandon) of San Diego, California; his son, Reid (Kelsey) of Alexander, Illinois; and his three beloved grandchildren, Kai, Reign and Saylor. He is also survived by his mother, Barbara Jessen; brothers, Jon and Jim (Shelley); sister, Jennifer Zoellner (Kirk); and many nieces and nephews, his Aunt Dolores and the Gilbert and Jessen cousins, whom he loved dearly. He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Darrell Jessen in 2005.
Jay leaves behind a lifetime of friendships, family memories, adventures and laughter. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
