About

Support University of Detroit Mercy’s 2025 Service Immersion Trips!

Service immersion trips provide students with unique opportunities to step outside their own communities, engage with new cultures, and serve in the spirit of solidarity and compassion. These transformative experiences combine direct service with education on critical social issues, fostering personal growth, empathy, and a deeper understanding of systemic challenges.

In spring 2025, University of Detroit Mercy is offering two incredible service immersion trips during spring break, each focusing on unique aspects of social justice and community engagement:

Joppa Mountain, Tennessee: March 1-7, 2025

Students traveling to Joppa Mountain will work alongside Glenmary Missions to address challenges faced by the local Appalachian community. These include the economic impact of the coal industry’s decline, barriers faced by refugees and migrants, and lack of access to food and housing. Participants will engage in hands-on projects such as building homes, supporting food pantries, and learning about the systemic factors contributing to poverty and displacement.

This trip invites students to live simply, build relationships rooted in mutuality, and connect deeply with those they serve. Accommodations will be in Glenmary Missions’ volunteer house, located on a small farm with breathtaking Appalachian views.

Montgomery, Alabama: March 1-8, 2025

This immersive journey, hosted by Resurrection Catholic Missions of the South, Inc., takes students into the heart of civil rights history and ongoing social justice efforts. Participants will visit historic landmarks like the Selma Bridge and Civil Rights Memorial while engaging with contemporary issues such as racial justice and voting access.

Through community engagement and reflective discussions, students will connect with civil rights leaders and advocates, cultivating leadership skills and a commitment to service. This trip encourages participants to link the past to the present, fostering a deeper understanding of the fight for equity and inclusion.

Make a Difference

The registration fee for each trip is $400 per student, covering transportation, lodging, meals, and program costs. While this fee represents a fraction of the true cost, University Ministry supplements expenses to keep the trips accessible. However, we need your support to expand our scholarship fund and ensure financial barriers don’t prevent any student from participating.

Your donation will directly help cover essential costs, provide scholarships for students in need, and make these transformative experiences accessible to participants from all backgrounds. By contributing, you are investing in the education of compassionate, informed leaders who will carry the values of service and justice into the world.

Thank you for supporting University of Detroit Mercy’s Service Immersion Trips and empowering our students to serve, learn, and grow. Together, we can make a lasting impact on their lives—and the lives of those they serve!
