Campus Kitchen at Detroit Mercy

This campaign ends on June 30 at 11:59PM EDT

Campus Kitchen at University of Detroit Mercy is empowering the next generation of leaders to implement innovative models to combat hunger and foster sustainable food systems. We provide students with an opportunity to apply things they learn in the classroom to benefit our community. With Campus Kitchen, Detroit Mercy students have opportunities to design and lead real programs that promote equity and sustainability in Detroit's food system.

Donations to Campus Kitchen nurture innovative collaborations between college students and Detroit residents to alleviate hunger, reduce food waste, and support urban agriculture through service, research, and educational initiatives.

In 2019, Campus Kitchen once again received Student Organization of the Year. We also launched an innovative Bite-Size Pitch competition where students pitched their ideas for new food justice programs, installed an irrigation system at JB’s Urban Farm in collaboration with Ford Volunteer Corps, and hosted Xavier University for an Immersive Learning Experience. Campus Kitchen engaged students in 1,396 hours of volunteering and donated 10,042 lbs of food to our neighboring communities, 90% of which was fresh produce.

In 2020, Campus Kitchen continues to engage students in impactful food justice work. In response to COVID-19, we expanded our delivery program and have distributed over 14,000 lbs of fresh produce, dry goods, and fresh bread to our neighbors on Princeton Street, families of Developing Despite Distance, and Lakeridge Village.

Continuing this year, Campus Kitchen is rebranding! In late November, Campus Kitchen will be announcing a new name, logo, and brand for our organization. We are excited to announce a new name and logo that best represents our mission and our four committees: Urban Agriculture, Healthy Communities, Food Recovery Network and Sustainability.
