About the Law in Action Travel Fund
The Law in Action Travel Fund seeks to expand opportunities for students at the Sturm College of Law to learn in off-site venues across the nation and around the world, including through class-related travel, study abroad programs, joint degree programs, inter-school competitions, externships, and attendance at conferences and events.
Examples of how this fund will support our students include:
Civil Rights Immersion Tour
As part of a course taught by Professor Alexi Freeman and Judge Don Toussaint (JD ’09), students will travel to pivotal sites associated with the Civil Rights Movement such as the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, the Legacy Museum in Montgomery, and the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma. On-site visits deepen students’ understanding of the varying roles played by lawyers, judges, and civic activists in expanding constitutional and civil rights.
Holocaust Seminar Travel Program
As part of a groundbreaking course taught by Professors Don Smith and Rachael Kamlet, students examine the roles played by lawyers and judges in association with the Holocaust. Visits to concentration camp memorials in Germany and the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. expand students’ understanding of the ethical responsibilities – and failings – of lawyers and judges during times of authoritarianism and intolerance.
Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot
The Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot advances the study of international commercial sales and international arbitration. Students from roughly 80 nations around the world write memoranda and present oral arguments before distinguished practitioners and academics. Final-round arguments occur in Vienna, Austria.
