Año Nuevo Reserve is raising money to help support our annual "Weigh the Weanlings" project. We will weigh, measure, and flipper tag at least 200 newly weaned elephant seals. Weighing the seals helps us understand how well their moms foraged the previous year and, therefore, the productivity of the open ocean that is difficult to study in other ways. The flipper tags allow us to study the seals throughout their lives and monitor changes in lifespan, reproductive success, movement, etc.
The partnership between California State Parks, Año Nuevo Reserve, and the UC Santa Cruz elephant seal research program allows us to not only collect high-quality data, but also provide incredible field opportunities to a diverse group of undergraduate researchers.
Please help us continue our amazing long-term elephant seal study while also training the next generation of researchers!
