ℹ️ About

There is an urgent need to identify, understand, and treat serious respiratory infections such as seasonal influenza, SARSCoV-2, and other emerging viruses that continue to have a profound effect on world health and the global economy.

Here at UC Riverside, our lab combines immunological and virological methods with computational analysis to address questions at the host-pathogen interface. A major interest of the lab is understanding how emerging and re-emerging viruses antagonize innate immune pathways to promote their replication. Another interest of the lab is studying the dynamics of lung immune cell populations during respiratory virus infections. Our goal is to translate our findings into host-targeted viral therapeutics.

Our lab recently discovered that pleural macrophages (PMs), a specific type of immune cell, can travel into the lung and help promote recovery from influenza (PNAS 2023). This observation is paradigm shifting and could lead to new lung therapies and treatments for viral infections.

Your Give Day support helps our lab continue this critical scientific research and train the next generation of viral immunologists working to improve global health.
