The CARE (Community Strategies to Advance Reproductive Justice and Equity) Lab partners with community members and organizations to better understand how racism and discrimination shape the lives of Black women and birthing people to create trainings and policy to improve birth outcomes in the Black community. We are seeking funds to expand the foundational work implemented through the CREATE (Community Racial Equity And Training Interventions and Evaluation of Current and Future Healthcare Clinicians) Study in response to California law mandating providers to take racial equity trainings.

The CREATE Study aims to improve the health of pregnant women and birthing people and their babies. The CREATE Study trains clinicians who provide care to pregnant people to address racism and implicit biases within doctors’ offices and hospitals to improve the quality of care given to Black women and birthing people and their babies.

To date 34 clinicians who care for pregnant people have completed the CREATE Study training. Most clinicians who complete the CREATE Study training provided them with useful tools and strategies to better serve Black women. Additionally, the many clinicians who completed the CREATE Study training felt like it motivated them change my clinical practices to better serve Black women.

We are seeking funds to expand this work to see if patients of clinicians who complete the CREATE training report better care and birth outcomes. This is important because California has recently passed laws requiring clinicians to take trainings to equip them in addressing racism and implicit biases; yet clinicians do not have access to a training to has proven results. Your generations contributions provides support for the program, including our current priority of helping us to make evidence-based trainings available for clinicians serving pregnant people.
