Major David A. Peabody Memorial Scholarship in CMSS

The Major David A. Peabody Memorial Scholarship in the Centre for Military, Security and Strategic Studies (CMSS) pays tribute to CMSS alumus, friend, and esteemed colleague, Dave Peabody, who died in an off-duty climbing accident on Dec. 26, 2024. As a community builder throughout Calgary and beyond, Dave’s commitment to education, diversity, recreation, and military service made a positive difference in the lives of many people. UCalgary is proud to be trusted to steward Dave’s legacy in a way that will align with his values.

UCalgary has a decades-long partnership with The Military Museums (TMM) in southwest Calgary, operating a branch library and archives, as well as Founders’ Gallery, all managed by Libraries and Cultural Resources. As TMM’s direction, Dave was committed to building a strong bridge of collaboration between the university and the museums.

Major Peabody’s career embraced diverse approaches to military culture and humanity. One week he would be helping fight wildfires in Jasper, and the next week he’d be helping plan the opening reception for a UCalgary exhibition of war art.

This scholarship ensures that Dave’s passion for education, service, and community continues to inspire future leaders. Your generous donation will help support students who share his dedication to military, security, and strategic studies, while fostering the same spirit of collaboration, diversity, and service that Dave embodied.

If the total amount received from all donors does not reach the endowment goal of $50,000 by February 28, 2027, the total amount received will be utilized to fund the award on an annual basis until the funds are completely depleted. Please note the University is not obligated to return any portion of the gifts already received.
