The UAB Department of Occupational Therapy Study Abroad Program gives students the opportunity to work in Cape Town, South Africa, and surrounding communities. Students collaborate with community leaders and rehabilitation providers while experiencing practice in different cultural context and resource realities. They contribute to local community-driven service experiences, support locally led programs, and learn in a wide range of environments, including schools, disability organizations, community centers, and rehabilitation programs. These experiences deepen students’ understanding of global health, sharpen their clinical reasoning, and build genuine cultural humility. Cost for the trip is typically $5,000 per student, including international travel, lodging, and program fees. Generosity of donors will also help sustain long-term partnerships with South African organizations that are leading community-centered rehabilitation work.
