UAB’s Mini Medical School is preparing Birmingham’s future healthcare leaders by bringing hands‑on, high‑impact learning directly to local middle school students. Led by Birmingham City Schools graduates Dr. Shaundra Blakemore and Dr. Brian Sims, and guided by program leader Dr. Tamera Coyne‑Beasley, the initiative introduces young scholars to the possibilities within science, technology, engineering, and math.
Launched in 2022 through the UAB Department of Pediatrics, the program has expanded from an initial 25 students to partnerships with 15 Birmingham-area middle schools, along with additional opportunities offered through the YMCA. Its mission is simple: exposure creates opportunity, and opportunity can change a student’s future.
During monthly sessions, UAB physicians, nurses, and healthcare professionals lead students through engaging, hands‑on simulations that bring medical careers to life. Participants learn skills like taking blood pressure, practicing CPR, examining vital signs, and exploring lifelike training models, while virtual sessions connect them with medical experts across the country who share ties to UAB.
As the program grows, so does the need for support—from maintaining simulation equipment to expanding access and transportation. Every gift helps open doors for more young scholars to discover their potential and imagine themselves in healthcare careers that strengthen Birmingham’s future.
