Medical students at the UAB Heersink School of Medicine are known for their resilience, dedication, and drive, but even the most determined future physicians can face unexpected challenges. When crises arise, the Medical Alumni Association’s (MAA) Medical Student Assistance Fund ensures that financial hardship isn’t a barrier to a student’s education.
Established in 2010, the fund provides swift, confidential support to students experiencing urgent financial need. Backed entirely by generous UAB medical alumni, it has distributed more than $75,000 to students navigating emergencies such as medical issues, family crises, natural disasters, and other unforeseen disruptions. Its purpose is simple: to prevent a temporary setback from derailing a student’s long‑term dream of becoming a physician.
As financial pressures grow, exacerbated by rising living costs and recent federal loan limitations, the demand for emergency assistance continues to increase. The Office of Medical Student Services carefully evaluates each request, ensuring students receive the help they need with dignity and without delay.
More than a financial resource, the Medical Student Assistance Fund is a powerful expression of alumni compassion. Each gift reinforces a critical message to today’s medical students—you are supported, you are valued, and you are never alone on your path to medicine.
