For more than 30 years, the UAB Marching Blazers—“The Sound of The Magic City”—have been the university’s spirited musical ambassadors, energizing football games, campus events, parades, and community celebrations. As the largest ensemble in the Department of Music, their excellence is built on discipline, dedication, and long hours of rehearsal. Director of Bands Sean Murray, Ph.D., notes that students commit to demanding band camps each August and often begin game days before sunrise, driven by pride in their craft and the community they form.
Donor support now plays a crucial role in sustaining the band’s traditions, helping fund travel, equipment, instruments, and opportunities that scholarships alone cannot cover. Participation builds leadership, resilience, and confidence, benefiting students from across academic disciplines—only about 10 percent are music majors. Alumni have gone on to diverse careers, and the program has even sparked more than 30 marriages. Through performances and outreach to local schools, the Marching Blazers continue to strengthen music education and community ties.
