School of Nursing Emergency Fund

About

Unexpected crises can derail even the most dedicated students, but at the UAB School of Nursing, no student faces hardships alone. The School of Nursing Emergency Fund exists to provide rapid, short-term assistance when life takes an unforeseen turn.

Whether students experience housing loss, sudden financial adversity, or other emergencies, the Emergency Fund serves as a crucial safety net that helps them stay enrolled and on track to graduate.

Established through a foundational grant from the Gertrude Skelly Foundation and sustained by generous support from alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of the nursing school, the Emergency Fund is designed to respond quickly and flexibly. Unlike more traditional scholarships, it addresses the student’s immediate needs so they can focus on their education during times of instability.

The demand for emergency assistance has grown in recent years. For nursing students, whose program allows little room for interruption, this support can mean the difference between having to quit the program and persevering.

By helping students overcome short-term crises, the School of Nursing Emergency Fund not only supports individual success, it strengthens the future nursing workforce and the communities these graduates go on to serve.
