Transforming Anesthesia Care in Malawi: Help Us Meet Our $3,000 Goal
Malawi, a country of over 19 million people, faces a severe shortage of physician anesthesiologists—fewer than five serve the entire nation. At Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) in Lilongwe, a 900-bed facility, only one physician anesthesiologist supports the capital. The hospital relies on Anesthesia Clinical Officers (ACOs) to deliver all anesthesia and ICU care. While these essential providers are skilled, they face significant challenges due to limited resources and training opportunities.
The UNC Department of Anesthesiology is working with KCH to strengthen anesthesia care by enhancing the ACO training program, which equips providers to deliver life-saving care throughout Malawi.
Your Opportunity to Help
This Tar Heel Tuesday, we’re raising $3,000 to support a “train-the-trainer” program at UNC’s Simulation, Education, and Technology (SET) Center for three leaders from KCH’s ACO program: Dr. Owen Malema, Edward Zimba, and Godfrey Phiri.
This four-week course will empower these leaders to create a simulation-based curriculum to improve anesthesia education and patient care at KCH.
Each participant’s training costs $6,000, covering travel, lodging, meals, and tuition. Thanks to a generous anonymous donor, every dollar raised for this challenge will be matched, doubling your impact, and enabling us to fully fund one participant’s training.
Donate now and help us reach our $3,000 goal to transform anesthesia care in Malawi.
