The Page Mauck Sustainability Initiative

Growing a Sustainable Future & Honoring a Legacy

The Page Mauck Sustainability Initiative is a visionary project that pays tribute to the life and legacy of longtime teacher, coach, and environmental advocate, Page Mauck, III. For more than three decades, Page inspired students and faculty alike with his passion for teaching, love of the outdoors, and dedication to environmental stewardship. Known for his calm and compassionate presence, Page encouraged students to explore, reflect, and grow into their most authentic selves.

This initiative carries forward that spirit, focusing first on a revitalization of the Mauck Memorial Garden — a space that reflects his values and continues to inspire hands-on learning and self-discovery for generations to come. After completing the garden project, the Page Mauck Sustainability Initiative hopes to further sustainability practices within the Trinity community and locally, with additional expansion phases to come.

The Garden Project

In 2008, Page Mauck and student Rowan Sprague began what is now called the Mauck Memorial Garden: a space designed to encourage students and faculty to grow food, minimize waste, and connect with themselves in the natural world. The Garden Project will build on this foundation, transforming the existing space into a fully revitalized outdoor learning environment that will serve as a model for sustainability practices on campus. The enhanced Mauck Memorial Garden will also provide an outdoor space for students and faculty to pause and connect with themselves, further supporting their emotional health and well-being.

Planned enhancements include:

    • Sustainable Garden Infrastructure:
A redesigned, cohesive layout featuring raised garden beds and accessible pathways built from durable, eco-friendly materials.
    • Outdoor Classroom with Covered Seating:
A pergola-style shelter with ample seating and meaningful student artwork to support collaborative learning, social connection, and self-reflection.
    • Educational Features:
Interpretive signage and interactive elements that teach students about sustainability, native ecosystems, and climate-conscious gardening practices.
    • Creative Learning Structures:
A trellis structure with an integrated chalkboard to support instruction, personal expression, and seasonal lessons.
    • Water Conservation Systems:
Reinstalled rain barrels and an innovative irrigation system designed to conserve water and model sustainable farming techniques.
    • Beautified Utility Screening:
A trellis screen designed to conceal nearby dumpsters, interwoven with climbing plants and student-created artwork to transform the space into something beautiful and meaningful.
    • Permanent Memorial to Page Mauck III:
A bronze plaque set in a dedicated location within the garden to honor Page’s legacy and lifelong commitment to education.
    • Native, Edible, and Pollinator Plantings:
A biodiverse landscape featuring native plants, a student-maintained edible garden, and a pollinator garden to support local ecosystems and hands-on learning.
    • Community Planting Days:
Interactive planting events designed to engage alumni, faculty, and local partners—strengthening community ties and expanding outdoor learning opportunities.

These improvements will enhance the teaching and learning experience for Trinity students while promoting environmental stewardship and supporting each student’s unique path to self-discovery.

A Long-Term Commitment

In addition to the Garden Project, the Page Mauck Sustainability Initiative seeks to establish a permanent endowment to support Trinity’s broader sustainability goals. The fund will provide for ongoing maintenance of the garden, enhancements to the existing sustainability course and campus-wide sustainability initiatives, and expanded community partnerships and outreach programs.

Timeline

The goal is to complete fundraising for the Garden Project in time for Homecoming Weekend 2025 and celebrate with the first annual Alumni Gardening Day on Saturday, October 4, 2025, bringing the Trinity community together in shared stewardship of this meaningful space. The full initiative and endowment campaign will officially launch in Fall 2025.
