TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa University’s Legal Clinic has started the Afghanistan Evacuation Project after stepping into help a family of 19 Afghan refugees immigrate to the U.S. This is the biggest project the clinic has taken on this year, but they believe this is too important not to step in.
“These are folks who are going to be left in a pretty dire living situation. It comes down to the idea of compassion and understanding,” stated Mimi Marton, the director of Tulsa University’s legal clinic. The immigration application to come into the country is $575, so this family would have to spend more than $10,000 on the application fees alone. To assist in this, the clinic hosted a fundraiser in order to help with these fees. They were able to raise $11,700. Currently, the clinic is waiting on the U.S. government to process the family’s applications."
