In support of free inquiry and expression, the University of Chicago Library is transforming the global knowledge environment to be open, accessible, and equitable. We enable the University and our greater community to create a better world through effective information services, a comprehensive connected collection, and a culture of innovation, respect, and partnership.
Funded entirely by philanthropy, the Library’s community engagement programs and activities connect us with our neighbors on the South Side, in greater Chicago, and beyond. Gifts during Giving Day to the Civic Engagement Fund enable the Library to develop collaborations with local institutions and individuals to share knowledge, preserve cultural heritage, and help create early-career development opportunities. Such partnerships include the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, where the Library has provided business research terminals, as well as access to databases and market data to support local entrepreneurs.
In addition, our annual Community Day draws hundreds of community members to the Library to learn about our resources, community organizations, and the broader University. The Library also hosts various educational events for the community featuring University of Chicago scholars and Library materials. Recent examples have included A Rare Look Inside Chicago’s History: The Ida B. Wells Collection, “Unveiling Belle da Costa Greene,” and “A Literary and Musical Evening with Dr. Samantha Ege.” These events, and so much more, are made possible only with the support of donors like you—and on Giving Day, your generosity goes further.
