In this video, Quadrivium, the Upper School String Ensemble, performs Lift Every Voice and Sing (known as the Black National Anthem). Music by J. Rosamond Johnson, words by James Weldon Johnson, arranged by Bob Phillips.

The Upper School String Ensemble's name, Quadrivium, refers to the Classical course of study that includes astronomy, arithmetic, geometry, and music. This course of study would follow the study of the Trivium: grammar, logic, and rhetoric. As a music ensemble nestled in an academic environment, the name Quadrivium reminds us that music study and performance requires us to combine logical, creative, scientific, historical, and literary knowledge to create art.
