About

Engineering is an ever-increasing international profession, and the Whitacre College of Engineering is committed to preparing future engineers with the knowledge and experience needed to meet the challenges presented by an ever-changing global landscape. Central to this effort is the International Engineering Program (IEP), which provides opportunities for the college's undergraduate students to gain first hand experience on a global scale. The program sends between 500-600 students overseas each year to participate in either study abroad programs, internships, research, or service opportunities.

Students experience a life-changing opportunity to study abroad and have the thrill of exploring another country and culture. They gain an awareness of global business practices, cross-cultural communication skills, language fluency, and become more culturally aware and self-confident, with the knowledge that they can thrive in any environment. Overall, this program enhances students' appeal to employers and gives them the tools they need to become future industry leaders.

Traditionally, having an international experience with its associated travel has been an opportunity out of reach for many students. More than 25% of our undergraduate population qualities as being under financial hardship, and one out of every four students faces financial challenges to participate in the study abroad program. The average scholarship is approximately $1,000. Funds raised from the Texas Tech Day of Giving will provide scholarship support for five full-time undergraduate engineering students to offset their expenses related to the International Experience Program, and ultimately give them this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to become the best engineers possible.
