About

The Stony Brook University Sailing Team was originally established in the late 1970's; after a brief hiatus, a small group of students decided to reboot the team in 2011. Fast forward to today and the team is now thriving with a fleet of eight FJ's and two 420's that are located at our home base at Port Jefferson Yacht Club. We sail competitively in the Mid-Atlantic division of ISCA against a range of varsity programs in the Northeast.

Our sailors' background range from a competitive high school sailing experience to people entering the world of boating for the first time. This gives us the unique ability to maintain a balance of growth between the competitive side of the team while providing the opportunity for anyone within the SBU community to learn how to sail.

As we move forward into the 2024-2025 academic year, we are looking for our community and alumni to support us as we raise funds to buy a new coach boat, sails and more to maintain our status as a highly competitive collegiate team in the northeast!

Alumni, Parents and Friends,

Please plan to join us for our home regatta this Spring! Details below.

Stony Brook Cup: Saturday & Sunday March 29th & 30th 2025
The annual Stony Brook Cup is held in loving memory of alumnus Brendan Brown-Mccue, CAS Class of 2017. Brendan was deeply involved in the SBU Sailing Team and the Long Island sailing community, having instructed at multiple yacht clubs. After graduating from SBU, Brendan went onto work for SEA Semester on tall ships, teaching sailing and marine science to college students and others.
Please join us in continuing to honor Brendan's legacy on our team and in the sailing community.
