Fighting cancer is not a journey you take alone.
No one understands this better than Anna Dempsey, whose husband Craig fought B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. For 14 months, Anna fought alongside her husband – providing care, transportation and support. Through those months, Anna and Craig became like family to all of us at Stony Brook Cancer Center and “19 South.”
After 10 hospital stays, eight rounds of chemotherapy and two types of immunotherapy, Craig lost his battle with cancer on December 23, 2021.
Though it was an incredibly difficult journey, these experiences left Anna with the desire to give back. Throughout Craig’s battle, one thing stood out to her above all else: the other families here at Stony Brook Cancer Center.
Through countless car rides to treatments, Anna recognized the toll that these appointments took on caregivers, who, unlike her, may not have the flexibility to provide transportation to and from appointments. That’s why she made the conscious decision to make a gift to our Patient Transportation Program.
This program, designed to reduce barriers to care, provides reliable transportation to treatment. Already Anna’s gift has had an immeasurable impact on the families who have received these services.
With your help, we can continue to support the families who fight together.
We pride ourselves on providing exceptional care to the patients and their caregivers, who, throughout their journey, become like a family to us. Your gift to the Stony Brook Cancer Center and the Patient Transportation Program can make all the difference.
Sincerely,
Yusuf Hannun, MD Director, Stony Brook Cancer Center
