Stony Brook University's Center for Prevention and Outreach (CPO)

The Challenge: Beyond the “Typical” Night Out

Many college students don't realize that alcohol is a powerful depressant that can lead to a fatal overdose. Common misconceptions — like “sleeping it off” or “walking it off” — can lead to tragic delays in seeking medical help. Combined with the rising threat of fentanyl across the nation, the need for student preparedness has never been higher.

Do you know when to call for help?

  • The Signs: Do you know how to recognize irregular breathing, cold/clammy skin or an inability to wake a friend?
  • The Knowledge Gap: Many students report they want to help, but they hesitate because they aren't sure if it’s “serious enough” to call 911.

How Your Donation Saves Lives

Your support funds the two pillars of our prevention strategy: Education and Equipment. The Center for Prevention and Outreach are removing the guesswork and the cost barriers to campus wellness and safety.

  • Training Sessions: Teaching students the signs of alcohol and opioid overdoses and how to call for help. In the Fall 2025 semester we trained 927 students across 25 sessions!
  • Lifesaving Resources: Providing easy-to-follow emergency guides and signage for students, faculty and staff.
  • Empowerment: Promoting the “Good Samaritan” mindset — ensuring students prioritize saving a life over the fear of getting in trouble.

Your Impact at a Glance

  • $20: Funds the printing of overdose prevention cards for a club or organization on campus.
  • $50: Provides the supplies needed for a Mario Kart and Mocktails event that focuses on preventing drinking and driving.
  • $100: Funds the printing of Narcan certification cards for an entire year.
  • $250: Sponsors our annual Homecoming SoberFest Tailgate, focusing on overdose prevention the night before Homecoming.
  • $3,000: Funds a student assistant position entirely focused on delivering weekly Narcan trainings across campus.
