Gifts to FoodLab Education contribute to...
Stony Brook FoodLab at Stony Brook University Southampton is building a bold and practical model for what a resilient regional food system can look like — one that integrates education, workforce training, environmental stewardship and community well-being. In the “Age of Food,” the challenge of nourishing communities amidst climate change, public health crises and supply chain instability has become one of the defining issues of our time.
FoodLab exists to meet that moment with solutions rooted in research, hands-on learning and local partnerships. FoodLab is advancing four interconnected pillars:
- Food Systems Education + Experiential Learning: FoodLab serves as a living classroom where students learn by doing — through applied research, internships and real-world projects focused on sustainable food production, food justice, systems thinking and emerging ag-tech. This work supports SUNY’s experiential learning priorities while preparing students for careers in sustainability, agriculture, public health and innovation.
- Sustainable Food Production + Innovation: FoodLab is growing a replicable micro-farm and greenhouse demonstration site that models climate-smart, bio-intensive growing practices. This includes training students in regenerative methods, season extension and food safety — while creating scalable approaches that can support Long Island’s food resilience goals.
- Community Programs + Public Engagement: Through programs like Tea Talk Tuesday, workforce-centered initiatives and partnerships with schools and local organizations, FoodLab functions as a convening hub. Community-facing workshops and events translate research into public knowledge and help residents build practical skills — from gardening to composting to food as medicine.
- Health, Nutrition + Food as Medicine: FoodLab is intentionally linking agriculture to human health outcomes. By supporting fresh food access, nutrition education and “food as medicine” partnerships, FoodLab advances preventive health, student wellness and community resilience — especially for vulnerable populations.
Giving Day support will directly strengthen FoodLab’s ability to expand internships, maintain and grow our teaching farm infrastructure, purchase essential equipment and supplies and increase public programming that benefits the entire region. Every gift helps cultivate the next generation of food and sustainability leaders — while making Stony Brook University a recognized hub for food innovation, education and community impact.
