Gifts to Support Conservation in Madagascar with Centre ValBio contribute to...
Madagascar is one of the most extraordinary places on Earth. Home to species found nowhere else — many of them endangered — it is a global biodiversity treasure facing urgent threats from habitat loss, deforestation and accelerating climate impacts.
Protecting Madagascar’s ecosystems is not only essential for the island’s future, but for global conservation.
Centre ValBio (CVB), Stony Brook University’s global research hub in Madagascar, advances conservation solutions from its base in Ranomafana National Park — one of the country’s most biologically rich and important protected areas. CVB serves as a platform for science, education and community partnership, supporting both the ecosystems of Madagascar and the communities that depend on them.
At CVB, researchers and students conduct field-based scientific work that helps answer critical questions: Which conservation strategies are most effective? How can threatened species be protected? How can forests and biodiversity be safeguarded while supporting local livelihoods?
CVB provides the infrastructure, expertise and long-term presence needed to answer these pressing questions.
Equally important, CVB builds the future of conservation by training the next generation of scientists and leaders. Students and early-career researchers gain hands-on experience in the field, supported by mentorship and real-world learning that prepares them to address the complex challenges of biodiversity protection. CVB also strengthens local capacity by supporting Malagasy-language staff, researchers and partners — helping to ensure conservation work is informed by local knowledge and led by those closest to the ecosystems at stake.
Your support makes this work possible. A Giving Day gift to CVB helps sustain the tools, training and on-the-ground capacity required to protect one of the world’s most biodiverse ecosystems for generations to come.
With your support, CVB can:
- Advance field-based research that informs conservation action.
- Train students and scientists through immersive learning experiences.
- Strengthen local capacity and long-term conservation leadership.
- Support programs that protect forests, wildlife and communities.
Together, we can protect Madagascar’s extraordinary biodiversity — and help build a lasting model for conservation that benefits the island and the world.
