Gifts to Excellence in Pharmacological Sciences contribute to...
Our mission is to provide excellence in biomedical research and graduate education. Our faculty has strong support from the National Institutes of Health and other agencies, and exciting findings are reported regularly in a host of premier journals. Our PhD program in molecular and cellular pharmacology brings together gifted students, scientists and physicians from BNL, CSHL and SBU who are striving to explore the biochemical and molecular mechanisms that regulate cell and organ function, and designing and developing effective pharmacological means to intervene when they are errant. The quality of the education and training offered by our program is reflected by 48 years of continuous NIH-funded training grant support, the participation of many affiliated faculty outside of the core department and outstanding outcomes for more than 200 PhD graduates who hold academic positions at top universities and in the pharmaceutical industry. In the past 15 years, we have graduated over 100 students, with an average time to degree of 4.9 years, with over 90 percent of our students graduating in no more than six years after entering the program. Our goal is to provide education, support and a training environment that successfully prepares students for subsequent academic or industrial career opportunities.
Our MS program in the pharmacology track of biomedical sciences provides a sound scientific foundation for students pursuing careers in the academic, pharmaceutical and government sectors. We also train scores of undergraduates in our labs, recruiting some to our PhD and MD-PhD programs, while sending off many more to top institutions across the country for similar training. Department of Pharmacology faculty research covers four main disciplines, which overlap in various ways. Your support will enable our faculty to pursue new and timely ideas faster than it is possible to obtain NIH funding for them, to acquire critical new state-of-the-art equipment as it becomes available and needed and to enhance our students’ training by sending them to national meetings and training workshops and allowing them to organize conferences at Stony Brook — even exploring their very own ideas in the lab!
