Stony Brook Sailing

The Stony Brook University Sailing Team was originally established in the late 1970s. After a brief hiatus, a small group of students rebooted the team in 2011. The team currently has 11 FJs and sails out of the Port Jefferson Yacht Club. We compete in the Mid-Atlantic division of the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association against a wide range of varsity and club programs in the Northeast.

The members of our team range from those with high school sailing experience to those who are completely new to sailing. This gives us the unique ability to balance the team’s competitive growth while also providing the opportunity for anyone within the SBU community to learn to sail.

Our current fleet of boats has and continues to serve us well. However, they range in age from 20 to 26 years. Between practices and home regattas, the boats sustain a fair amount of wear and tear. While the boats are quite durable, damage becomes more likely and repairs become more frequent as the fleet ages. Our goal is to proactively begin replacing our current fleet with newer boats. This will ensure that we can continue to provide sailing opportunities for all our club members on safe and reliable equipment.
